City officials have approved a donation from CHS McPherson Refinery to be used for McPherson Community Building renovations. Ken Sims, VP Refining McPherson, recently presented the $116,800 gift to Mayor Thomas Brown. “The City of McPherson is pleased CHS will be a legacy partner with this historic project,” said Brown. “The local refinery has been instrumental in our community’s success for many years.”The gymnasium was home court to the Globe Refiners, an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball team. In 1936, the local team became the nucleus of the United States Basketball Team and won the first-ever Olympic Gold Medal in their sport. Six players worked at the Globe Oil and Refining Company located in McPherson. The company became the National Cooperative Refinery Association in 1943 followed by CHS McPherson Refinery in 2015.The McPherson Community Building will reopen later this year. Renovations will result in an attractive, comprehensive building offering modern features to support community meetings, sports and special events. General project funding was provided by a half-cent sales tax, which was instituted by public vote in 2012.
